Small Group Tour to Valle Nevado and Farellones from Santiago

About this experience

If you are coming to Santiago you can’t miss the opportunity to spend a full-day with your guide visiting the Andes Mountains. Stop and explore the Valle Nevado Ski Center, considered one of the best of South America, containing the longest snow slopes in the continent. Also, visit the town of Farellones, (located 2340 meters above sea level), a place that enchants the visitor with its shelter type romantic installations made of stone, making it an ideal place for meditation and relaxation.

Planning perspective

How I’d plan this experience

I’d choose this Andes day out if you want a straightforward way to see the snow country from Santiago without committing to skiing. It is best treated as a flexible mountain-sightseeing day with the possibility of snow activities, rather than an all-inclusive ski package: hotel pickup is included, but mountain activities, food, drinks and ski clothing are not. The reward is the high-Andes setting; the trade-off is that a mountain day can change shape with conditions.

Who I think will get the most from it

I’d recommend this to first-time snow seekers, families who want an accessible introduction to the mountains, and non-skiers who care more about scenery than laps on the slopes. Valle Nevado is presented as a ski resort, but you do not need to make skiing the purpose of the day. That makes it a sensible choice for mixed-interest groups, where some people may want snow activities while others simply want mountain views.

If you are pregnant or have poor cardiovascular health, I’d take the stated cautions seriously rather than assuming this is an effortless sightseeing excursion. The itinerary reaches mountain locations at substantial elevation, so the day suits travellers who are comfortable adapting their plans to how they feel.

Choose Farellones for play, Valle Nevado for a ski-resort atmosphere

The key decision is how you want to spend your mountain time. I’d choose Farellones Park if travelling with children or if your priority is a more activity-led snow day: it has multiple game stations and an indoor place to rest. It sounds like the stronger fit for families who want a defined place to settle in rather than merely stop for photographs.

I’d lean toward Valle Nevado if you want the larger-scale alpine landscape and ski-resort setting. The itinerary allows you to spend the day there, with the day’s recommendation shaped by conditions. Do not assume that both places will receive equal time: feedback indicates that Farellones may sometimes be a brief photo stop while Valle Nevado takes the main share of the day.

Budget as though the transport is only the foundation

My advice is to separate the transport-and-guiding decision from the cost of your actual mountain day. Ski-area activities, food and drinks are excluded, and ski clothing is not included either. That is perfectly workable if you mainly want the drive and views, but it can become a more involved day if you plan to ski, ride a gondola or use Farellones’ attractions.

I’d bring a snack and make a deliberate call on clothing before departure. If you are only sightseeing and staying out of deep snow, layers may be more useful than renting a full kit; if you expect to spend time in snow activities, plan for the appropriate gear. Safety glasses are also worth considering for snowy, bright conditions.

Allow for a changeable, winding mountain day

I’d keep this day free of fixed evening plans. Pickup timing is confirmed the night before, and mountain traffic, road closures and ski-resort congestion can alter the route or what is feasible. The sensible mindset is to value the mountain experience rather than fixate on reproducing a rigid itinerary.

If you are prone to motion sickness, prepare before you leave Santiago. Feedback specifically flags many sharp curves on the climb toward Farellones and Valle Nevado. That is the clearest practical limitation here: the scenery may be dramatic, but the road is not likely to feel restful for everyone.

For those who want to go to the snow this is an excellent alternative. Parques de Farellones has more than 5 game stations plus a closed place to rest, this place expands the possibilities of fun for visitors, and especially of all families in Chile.

Skiing at La Parva Chile in the Andes is definitely inimitable and worthy of bragging rights. The resort of La Parva is one of the Tres Valles (Three Valleys) ski areas, along with El Colorado and Valle Nevado. Relative to these resorts, La Parva ski resort gets few international visitors and it’s more like an exclusive private ski club for Santiago’s wealthy families.

The world’s longest mountain range (on land), The Andes runs along the west coast of South America for approximately 7000 km/4,300 mi, with an average height of 4000 m. The Andes mountains provide a stunning backdrop to Santiago and are very popular with tourists seeking active day trips outside of the city. Trekking, rafting, horse-riding and skiing are the most popular activites.

Yerba Loca Valley, a mountain sanctuary where
the outdoors and the silence open their doors, inviting you to relax, exercise and connect with the natural environment of the Andes.
